Yes — there are genuinely free AI agents you can use today, not trial versions in disguise. The honest answer is just more nuanced than "free" or "not free": what's free depends on which layer you're talking about — the AI model, the automation platform, or the ERP-native agent — and each one draws its free line in a different place.
This isn't a "sign up and hit a paywall on step two" list. It's a real inventory of what's actually usable at $0, followed by exactly where each free tier runs out — including the free tiers of tools that aren't ours.
By the end, you'll know what you can build for free right now, and what specifically forces an upgrade when it does.
This guide covers what's genuinely free across today's AI agent landscape, where each free plan's real limit sits, and when it stops making sense to stay on it. Reading time: 7 minutes.
In this article:
01 What counts as a free AI agent and what is only a trial
A free plan, a trial and free software are different offers. A free plan may continue without a subscription while limiting usage; a trial ends after a period or allowance. Self-hosted software can have no licence fee while still requiring a computer, model access and maintenance. Some free platforms include only introductory model credits, so check the cost of continued execution.- General-purpose AI chat. Free chat access is not automatically an action-capable agent. Check the actual tools and permitted actions rather than assuming that a model’s free chat includes agent execution.
- Self-hosted automation. n8n Community Edition can run workflows and an AI Agent node without a paid licence key. Hosting, model usage and maintenance remain your responsibility, and its Sustainable Use License sets conditions on permitted use. We've covered what n8n actually is and what it's good for in more detail here.
- Light cloud automation. Hosted free agent plans such as Activepieces, Make AI Agents and Zapier Agents can connect applications and perform actions within their published usage limits.
- A free tier of Binhex Cloud itself. The Free Platform includes one user, all apps, 10GB of storage and one monthly AI credit, without a scheduled plan expiry. AI capacity remains limited, and inactive workspaces may pause.
That's the honest free list. Nothing here is bait — each of these is something you can actually build with at zero cost, today. See exactly what each paid plan adds on top of this (Binhex Cloud plans).
02 The ten best free AI agents
Checked on 30 September 2026 using official product pages, plan details and documentation. These ten options provide agent actions or tools for building agent workflows. They include hosted free plans and free software you run yourself; model, infrastructure or connected-service charges may still apply. The order is alphabetical, and this is a feature-and-cost comparison rather than a hands-on performance ranking. Binhex Cloud is our own platform.
| Tool | Free tier | Real limit |
| Activepieces | Hosted free plan with agents and workflows | AI and tool calls use credits; confirm allowance and reset rule |
| Agent Zero | MIT-licensed self-hosted agent software | You provide runtime, model access and supervision |
| AnythingLLM | Free desktop and self-hosted agent software | Hardware, model use and external tools can cost |
| Binhex Cloud Free Platform | Hosted plan: one user, all apps, 10GB | One monthly AI credit; not a fixed number of tasks |
| Dify | Sandbox: one member, five apps, 200 message credits | Credits are not advertised as a monthly allowance |
| Langflow | MIT-licensed local visual agent builder | Model calls, hosting and maintenance are separate |
| Make AI Agents | Hosted Free: 1,000 credits per month | Credits cover operations and AI; own provider is paid |
| n8n Community Edition | Free self-hosted workflows with an AI Agent node | Hosting, models, upkeep and licence conditions apply |
| Open WebUI | Free self-hosted software with tool calling | Model and hosting costs; branding licence conditions |
| Zapier Agents | Hosted Agents Free: 400 activities per month | Tests count; intervention after 10 activities in a run |
Activepieces
Activepieces offers a hosted Free plan with agents that choose and execute permitted app actions or workflows. It suits small, connected automations without managing your own server.
Limit: AI steps and tool calls consume credits; confirm the current allowance and reset rule before planning recurring work.
Agent Zero
Agent Zero is MIT-licensed software that runs an agent in a computer environment with browser, file and code tools. Its interface is useful for technically managed, multi-step tasks rather than only text replies.
Limit: you supply the runtime and model access, control permissions and cover any infrastructure or model charges.
AnythingLLM
AnythingLLM provides a free local desktop app and self-hosted software with agent tools, custom skills and Agent Flows. A flow can call APIs or read and write files, and local models are supported.
Limit: available hardware, model capability and any paid external tools determine what you can run at no extra cost.
Binhex Cloud Free Platform
Our Free Platform includes one user, all apps, 10GB of storage and one monthly AI credit with no expiry date for the plan. Emma can configure modules and prepare invoice drafts inside the workspace.
Limit: one AI credit is not a fixed number of tasks; recurring use must fit the available capacity.
Dify
Dify combines visual workflows with agents that select tools and call external services. Its free Sandbox includes one member, five apps and 200 message credits; Community software can also be self-hosted.
Limit: the included credits are not advertised as a monthly allowance, and continued model use or self-hosting can create costs.
Langflow
Langflow is an MIT-licensed visual builder for agents and workflows that can be installed locally. Its Agent component connects models to tools, and completed flows can be exposed through an API or MCP.
Limit: free software does not include unlimited model calls, hosting or the technical work needed to maintain the workflow.
Make AI Agents
Make AI Agents lets you build agents that select tools and run workflows across apps. Agents are available on all plans through Make's AI provider, including the permanent Free plan.
Limit: Free includes 1,000 monthly credits shared by operations and AI use; connecting your own model provider requires a paid plan.
n8n Community Edition
n8n Community Edition is free software for self-hosted workflows, including an AI Agent node that chooses external tools and APIs. It is an option when someone can operate the installation.
Limit: hosting, model usage and maintenance remain your responsibility, and the Sustainable Use License restricts permitted uses.
Open WebUI
Open WebUI is free self-hosted software that can run agentic conversations through native tool calling, MCP and API tools. A compatible model can select tools and continue through several steps.
Limit: models, hosting and secure tool configuration are your responsibility, and the current licence includes branding conditions.
Zapier Agents
Zapier Agents can use connected information and carry out app actions, such as creating a task and notifying a team. Agents Free is a hosted plan without a scheduled expiry.
Limit: it includes 400 activities per month, counting tests, and requests intervention after 10 activities in a run before continuing; one task can require several activities.
A couple of adjacent "free" questions worth a straight answer, even though they're not the focus of this article:
- Free accounting AI? — a fair question with its own honest answer, covered in a dedicated article here.
- Free AI-powered CRM? — worth the same scrutiny: check what's actually included versus what's a trial with a countdown.
The theme repeats everywhere: free tiers are real, and every one of them draws its line at reasoning on one side and acting reliably on your actual data, at volume on the other.
03 Free frameworks for building your own agent
A framework supplies components for programming your own agent; it is not a ready-to-run hosted service. A technical team still needs to connect a model, define permitted tools, deploy the software and inspect failures. Choose one based on its current licence, maintenance and integration requirements, and budget for inference, infrastructure and the team’s work even when the code has no licence fee.
04 Where the free tier ends
Every free tier above is real, and every one of them has a specific, findable ceiling — not a vague "upgrade for more" wall.
- Hosted free plans: check whether the allowance counts credits, activities, messages or executions; a single business task can consume several units.
- Introductory credits: a free entry plan may include a finite model allowance rather than a monthly renewable quota.
- Self-hosted software: no software subscription does not remove hosting, model-use, administration or maintenance costs.
- Agent workflows: check the connected apps, allowed tools, run length and intervention requirements of the specific agent plan.
Usage limits
Check what is counted, when the allowance resets and what happens when it is exhausted. Separate requests, actions, tokens, credits and workflow executions; they are not interchangeable units.
Data and privacy
Review what information you may send, how it is retained and which controls apply to your account. Use a controlled test dataset until the handling of the business data you need is clear.
No connection to your ERP or CRM
Do not confuse answering a question with reading an up-to-date business record. Confirm whether the free workflow can access the required system under the right permissions, or whether the team must export and copy information manually.
No support or audit trail
Check the support channels and the evidence available when something goes wrong. Before making the workflow operational, verify whether you can review inputs, proposed actions and results, and who will investigate failures.
Free access can be useful for a controlled pilot. Before making a workflow operational, check the limits that affect its actual tasks, data, connections and support.
05 When it is worth paying
There's a fairly predictable moment where a free plan stops being a good deal, even though it's still technically free. It's not about total cost — it's about what the free tier is quietly costing you in time, risk, or missed answers.
Watch for these signals:
- You're rebuilding the same workaround weekly. If you're manually copying data around a free tool's limitation, the time you're spending is the real cost — it's just not on an invoice.
- The task touches real business data. A free AI chat tool can reason about a problem you describe to it, but it can't see your actual invoices, stock, or customer records unless it's connected — and free tiers of general AI chat tools generally aren't.
- Someone now depends on it working. A flow that's fine to babysit as an experiment becomes a liability the moment a colleague expects it to just work every morning.
- You're already paying in maintenance hours. Self-hosted, free software still needs someone's time. Past a certain point, that time costs more than a modest subscription would.
None of this means free tiers are a trap — they're genuinely the right choice while you're testing an idea. The shift is simply from "is this free" to "is this reliable enough for what I'm now asking it to do."

Frequently asked questions
Yes. The comparison above includes permanent hosted free plans and free software you run yourself. They can perform actions or build agent workflows, but model usage, hosting and connected services may still cost money. Check the specific plan and the tools your task needs.
Limits differ by product: usage credits or activities, team access, permitted tools, intervention during long runs, and responsibility for hosting and maintenance. A free plan does not guarantee unlimited execution or the controls your business workflow requires.
