VeriFactu is the verifiable invoicing system promoted by the Spanish Tax Agency. It is not a new tax, but a technical standard that all invoicing software must comply with to guarantee that records are tamper-proof and transparent.

Although the technical development was completed in 2024, the government decided to extend the deadlines to facilitate adaptation for SMEs and the self-employed. But be aware: just because it's not mandatory today doesn't mean you have to wait until the last day.

Following the latest regulatory changes (including the 2025 Royal Decree-Law that adjusted the timetable), these are the final dates you should mark in red:

• January 1, 2027: Mandatory for all companies (legal entities) subject to Corporate Income Tax.
• July 1, 2027: Mandatory for self-employed individuals (natural persons) and other taxpayers.
• Current situation (2026): We are in the voluntary transition period. Companies can now issue VeriFactu invoices to test their systems without risk of penalty for technical errors.

For a system to be legal from 2027 onwards, it must comply with three pillars that the AEAT is already auditing:

1. Integrity and Immutability: Once the invoice is generated, it cannot be modified or deleted without leaving a trace.
2. QR Code and Digital Fingerprint: Each invoice must have a QR code so that your client can verify on the Tax Office website that the invoice has been declared correctly.
3. Interconnection: The software must be prepared to send the records to the AEAT automatically if you so decide (VeriFactu system itself).
